I first had this idea in 2016.
Online fashion jewellery in India was barely a category then. I had a notebook, a feeling, and a very clear picture in my head of what this could be. I also had every reason to wait. It wasn't the right time. I wasn't ready. Maybe next year.
Next year became ten years.
For eighteen years, I have worked in IT. I joined a company straight out of graduation and I am still there. I am good at thinking in systems, building in structures, making things work inside a framework someone else designed. I do that well. For someone else's vision. The quiet parallel project - the one I kept postponing - is my own.
It begins with my mother.
But if I'm honest, this story doesn't begin in 2016. It begins much earlier. With my mother.
The real beginning was not a market gap or a pivot moment. It was my mother coming back from the grocery store. There was always a jewellery shop near her grocery store. She would come home with vegetables, sometimes bread, and often - not always, but often enough that I looked for it - a small piece of jewellery. Nothing expensive. Nothing meant for an occasion. Just something she had seen and thought of me.
I travel, and wherever I travel, I stop. A stall I wasn't planning to visit. A market I passed by accident. A shop with no signage and rings in a glass case. I have jewellery boxes from cities I barely remember. I have pieces I cannot name the occasion for because there was no occasion - I just needed to have them.
I will find a mood for it.
That line is where MIHIRA began. Not in the market research, not in the product brief. In the understanding that a piece of jewellery does not wait for a reason. It exists for a Tuesday morning when you feel like a different woman than you were on Monday. For the meeting where you needed something that felt like armour. For the evening you spent alone and got dressed for yourself anyway.
MIHIRA is built around 12 named emotional states - moods, not occasions. That is the only claim we are making. Not that we invented jewellery, not that we are the first brand to care about craft or aesthetics. There are extraordinary jewellery brands in the world. We are not here to claim a first. We are here to be the most intentional about this one specific thing: that she is not one woman. She is all of them. And there is a jewellery for every version of her.
Vivek is my husband and the co-founder of MIHIRA. He handles everything on the ground - the operations, the logistics, the parts of building a brand that happen before anyone sees anything. There are days when I am all twelve moods at once. Vivek is the one who is never alarmed by any of them. At some point he stopped asking when I was going to start and started asking what I needed to begin. That question is why this exists.
Twelve moods.
Every piece belongs to one. Every woman contains all twelve.
